In 1989, Kevin Costner starred in a movie called “Field of Dreams” where a farmer named Ray in Dyersville, Iowa built a baseball field in the middle of his corn field.
James Earl Jones noted that the one constant in history has been baseball.
The voices told Ray, “if you build it, they will come”.
And come they have…
In a historic event, the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees will play a game for real on the field that Ray built back in 1989. The stands will be filled with 8,000 Iowa residents and watch the stats being displayed on a hand operated scoreboard.
This will also mark the first time that a professional baseball game will be played in the state of Iowa.
The game that was originally scheduled to the 2020 season was postponed when the baseball season was cut short due to the Covid 10 pandemic.
After arriving at the ball park, some of the players walked through the corn to view the field that was built for the film and upon returning, they got lost in the corn. Several of the players are hoping to launch a ball into that corn during the game.
White Sox skipper Tony LaRussa will miss the historic game tonight due to his brother-in-law’s funeral.
Wearing retro styled uniforms, the White Sox will be the home team for tonight’s game. Even the FOX Sports crew got into the spirit of the event with retro outfits.
Left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney will start for the Yankees; while right-handed pitcher Lance Lynn will start the game for the White Sox. Iowa native will call the balls and strikes as the home plate umpire.
