Like NASCAR the IndyCar 2020 racing season was filled with postponements, cancellations, and the rescheduling of races.  And it is beginning to look as though 2021 will be more of the same.

With one of the strictest pandemic lockdowns in the nation, sporting events originally scheduled in California are being moved to other dates and locations.

The Long Beach road course race originally scheduled for April 18 has been moved to September 26; making it a part of a three race west coast swing with Portland and Laguna Seca and the final race of the season.

An iconic race, Penske Entertainment Corp. president and CEO Mark Miles spoke on the race at Long Beach via a press release saying, “it is important to have Long Beach rescheduled to continue the history and tradition for one of the series’ hallmark events in one of the nation’s premier media markets.  As we did during the 2020 season, we will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and maintain flexibility across our schedule.”

The race at Long Beach sits behind the Indianapolis 500 in longevity for IndyCar racing.  The 2021 race will mark the first time that the race will be held outside the month of April.

Grand Prix Association of Long Beach president and CEO Jim Michaelian spoke on the date change via a press release saying, “we believe that this move will afford us the best opportunity to provide our guests with a fun and exciting experience in a safe and unrestricted environment.  It will be a welcome sight to see the INDYCAR series cars and stars back on the downtown streets of Long Beach in the fall.”
