Recently basketball legend Michael Jordan and NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin announced a joint venture to launch a new racing team. At the time of the announcement, it was known only that Bubba Wallace would be the team’s drivers.
On October 22, the team owners have revealed a few more details about the team owned by Jordan and Hamlin. 23XI (23 eleven) Racing will feature the number 23 on their car that is set to run beginning with Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway next February.
The 23 represents the jersey number Jordan wore when he played for the Chicago Bulls where he was a part of six championship teams. The number eleven represents the number of Hamlin’s Joe Gibbs Racing car.
Denny Hamlin spoke on the team’s name in an official release saying, “Michael and I have a shared vision for this team, so it’s exciting to see it reflected in the team name and on the race car with the iconic number 23 that Michael made famous.”
23XI has yet to reveal whether Wallace will be behind the wheel of a Ford, a Chevrolet, or a Toyota as more detail will be forthcoming as the duo continue to build the team.
