Comedic actor John Witherspoon died October 29, 2019 as a result of a heart attack in Sherman Oaks, California at the age of 77.
Best known for playing the role of Ice Cube’s father in the “Friday” films; Witherspoon appeared in over 80 roles including the voice of the grandfather in the animated series “The Boondocks”, “The Incredible Hulk”, “Good Times”, the MC at the Cinderella Club in “The Jazz Singer”, “WKRP in Cincinnati”, “Amen”, the Reverend in “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka”, “Townsend Television”, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, “Vampire in Brooklyn”, over 100 episodes on “The Wayans Bros.”, “The Tracy Morgan Show”, “The First Family”, the role of James Brown on “Black-ish”, and “Black Jesus”.
He was also a frequent guest of David Letterman on late night television.
John Weatherspoon was born on January 27, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan. He was a fashion model in Detroit before becoming a star in Hollywood.
He is survived by his wife of over 30 years Angela and children John David and Alexander.
