The Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series gets a doubleheader day started with the Sunoco 159 on the road course at Daytona International Speedway.

This is also the first of the three Triple Truck Challenge races where the winner receives a bonus of $50,000. If the same driver wins all three races, they will win a bonus of $500,000.

After winning the race in Michigan last week, Zane Smith will sit on the pole and bring the field to the green flag. Christian Eckes starts alongside on the front row of the 38 truck field.

Stages one of the race is only 12 laps long with stage two lasting 13 laps and stage three lasting 19 laps for a total of 44 laps around the 3.61 mile course.

Alex Taglioni is considered a road course ringer, but Brett Moffitt is the only driver in the field who has a previous road course win.

Zane Smith brings the field down for the green flag start of the race but after missing turn one and flat spotting his tires, Brett Moffitt takes the lead of the race.

Lap two, Brett Moffitt has pulled out to a lead of nearly two seconds over Tyler Ankrum, Christian Eckes, Austin Hill, and Ben Rhodes round out the top five.

Lap three, Brett Moffitt has increased his lead to two and a half seconds on Tyler Ankrum; Christian Eckes, Austin Hill, and Ben Rhodes round out the top five.

Christian Eckes takes second form Tyler Ankrum over two and a half seconds back from leader Brett Moffitt. Sheldon Creed has taken fifth place form Ben Rhodes.

After some issues in a chicane, Brett Moffitt’s lead is down to under a second.

Lap four, the top five are Brett Moffitt, Christian Eckes, Tyler Ankrum, Sheldon Creed, and Austin Hill.

Lap five, Brett Moffitt continues to lead the race with a lead of over two and a half seconds on Christian Eckes; Sheldon Creed, Todd Gilliland, and Austin Hill round out the top five.

Derek Kraus missed the chicane and has to make a stop and go penalty before continuing in the race. Drivers who miss the chicane must come to a complete stop before moving on; if a driver does not serve the stop and go, the penalty becomes a pass through penalty.

Lap six, Brett Moffitt has increased his lead to three and a half seconds on Christian Eckes; Sheldon Creed, Todd Gilliland, and Austin Hill round out the top five.

Roger Reuse, who has been off the track since the race began, is the only driver not on the lead lap.

Lap six. Brett Moffitt continues to increase his lead which is now over four seconds in front of Christian Eckes; Jennifer Jo Cobb is the only driver one lap down.

Lap seven, over five seconds in front of the field, Brett Moffitt has begun lapping trucks with Tim Viens and Jennifer Jo Cobb both a lap down.

Lap eight, Brett Moffit’s lead is now nearly six seconds on Sheldon Creed; Christian Eckes, Austin Hill, and Todd Gilliland round out the top five.

Short pitting, some of the drivers have brought their trucks down pit road for service.

Lap nine, Brett Moffitt is dominating the race with a lead of over six and a half seconds on Sheldon Creed.

Mark Smith brings out the first caution flag of the race when he spins out on lap 10. Carson Hocevar also got off the course.

Bobby Kennedy was not feeling well and the team has made a driver change with Josh Reaume taking over.

Jennifer Jo Cobb was in the garage for mechanical repairs.

Grant Enfinger and Stewart Friesen both have had electrical issues and have had to make battery and alternator changes.

After pit stops, Christian Eckes, who stayed out on the track, will bring the field down for the green flag start of stage two on lap 15. Again turn one has proved to be an issue for some drivers where not everyone has made the turn.

Johnny Sauter gets off into the grass, but the track stays green.

A very hot day – 90 degrees – some of the teams are having electrical issues while trying to keep the truck and the driver cooled off.

Todd Gilliland is on pit road for a battery change. Derek Kraus is also on pit road after getting off the track and causing some truck damage.

Lap 18, Sheldon Creed comes from third to take the lead with Raphael Lessard in second; Alex Tagliani, Parker Kligerman, and Matt Crafton round out the top five.

NASCAR is reviewing the pass for the lead, there is some question as to whether Matt Crafton’s truck made the chicane properly.

The caution flag comes out with 12 laps remaining in the race when Josh Reaume is stopped on the track. In the words of FOX broadcaster Michael Waltrip, original driver Bobby Kennedy was ill and now the truck is ill.

Matt Crafton stayed out on the track despite being short on fuel to make it to the end of the race. The team feels that the caution flags will give them the cushion they need to complete the race without stopping.
