The NASCAR Cup Series returns to Michigan International Speedway for the second race of a doubleheader weekend with the Consumers Energy 400.

After the Firekeeps Casino 400 on Saturday, NASCAR inverted the top 20 finishers, putting Chris Buescher on the pole with Clint Bowyer starting alongside on the front row.  Race winner Kevin Harvick will start the race from the 20th position.  The second half of the field will start the race from their finishing position.

In a doubleheader weekend, the teams must run the same car in both races.  If a driver has been involved in a crash and has to go to a backup car, then they will have to start the race from the back of the field.  Pole sitter Chris Buescher, Austin Dillon, Ryan Newman, Tyler Reddick, Aric Almirola, Michael McDowell, Ryan Preece, John Hunter Nemechek, and Cole Custer will all have to start the race from the back of the field in a backup car.

After an engine change, Brennan Poole and the number seven car with a transmission and driver change will also have to start the race from the back of the field.  Joey Gase has been replaced by Josh Bilicki.

Stage one of the race is 40 laps, stage two is 45 laps, and stage three is 71 laps in length for a total of 156 laps around the two mile track.

In addition to having to start the race from the back of the field due to a backup car, Austin Dillon’s team made some unapproved adjustments and will have to serve a pass through penalty once the race begins.

Clint Bowyer and William Byron are on the front row with Clint Bowyer bringing the field down for the green flag start of the race.  Bowyer and Byron go side by side as drivers get three and four wide across the track.  Clint Bowyer takes the lead with William Byron in second.

Lap two, Clint Bowyer is in the lead with Jimmie Johnson a half second back and Matt DiBenedetto in third.

Lap four, Clint Bowyer is in the lead; Jimmie Johnson, Matt DiBenedetto, William Byron, and Christopher Bell round out the top five.  Saturday’s race winner Kevin Harvick is in 13th place.

Lap six, Clint Bowyer has a lead of over half a second on Jimmie Johnson with Matt DiBenedetto over a second back in third.

Only six laps into the race, the drivers are spread out through the track.

Lap eight, Clint Bowyer has pulled out to a lead of over a second on Jimmie Johnson.  Kevin Harvick is in 13th place.

Lap 10, Clint Bowyer continues to increase his lead and is now a second and a half in front of Jimmie Johnson.  All 39 cars are on the lead lap including Austin Dillon after serving his pass through penalty.

Lap 12, Clint Bowyer has a lead of two and a half seconds on Christopher Bell with Matt DiBenedetto nearly three seconds back in third; William Byron and Erik Jones round out the top five.  Kevin Harvick has entered the top 10.

Lap 17, Clint Bowyer continues to dominate the race with a lead of nearly three seconds on Christopher Bell.

Lap 20, Clint Bowyer’s lead on Christopher Bell is down to less than two and a half seconds with 36 cars on the lead lap.

Lap 23, the Busch brothers are nose to tail again for this race

Lap 24, Christopher Bell has closed the gap on Clint Bowyer to under two seconds; Matt DiBenedetto, William Byron, and Erik Jones round out the top five with 33 cars on the lead lap.

Lap 26, Clint Bowyer has increased his lead to two seconds on Christopher Bell; Matt DiBenedetto, William Byron, and Erik Jones round out the top five.  In ninth place, Kevin Harvick is running the fastest laps of the race.

Lap 30, Clint Bowyer’s lead is now back up to over two and a half seconds over Christopher Bell; Matt DiBenedetto, William Byron, and Erik Jones round out the top five.

Lap 32, Clint Bowyer’s lead is now nearly three seconds on Christopher Bell with 32 cars on the lead lap.

Lap 33, Clint Bowyer continues to dominate the field and has a three second lead on Christopher Bell; there are 31 cars on the lead lap.

Lap 34, the top five are Clint Bowyer, Christopher Bell, Matt DiBenedetto, Kyle Busch, and William Byron.

Lap 36, Clint Bowyer’s lead is back down to under two and a half seconds on Christopher Bell with Kyle Busch in third nearly four seconds behind; Matt DiBenedetto and Erik Jones round out the top five.

Ryan Blaney had to make a second trip down pit road after the crew didn’t get his fuel cell full.

Kyle Busch brings the field down for the green flag start of stage two on lap 48 from the outside lane with Kevin Harvick right behind him.  William Byron chose the inside lane and will start alongside Busch.  Kyle Busch gets out in front for the lead after a push from Kevin Harvick.  Kevin Harvick passes Kyle Busch to take the lead.

Lap 50, Kevin Harvick ahs a half second lead on Kyle Busch.  The drivers are getting three and four wide across the track.

Lap 51, Brad Keselowski takes third from Clint Bowyer.

Lap 52, Kevin Harvick has pulled out to a lead of over a second on Kyle Busch; Brad Keselowski, Clint Bowyer, and Erik Jones round out the top five.

Lap 54, Brad Keselowski passes Kyle Busch for second.

Some teams are reporting cording on the tires.

Lap 55, Kevin Harvick has a lead of nearly a second and a half on Brad Keselowski.

Lap 60, Kevin Harvick has a lead of over a second and a half on Brad Keselowski with Kyle Busch in third nearly two seconds back; Clint Bowyer and Christopher Bell round out the top five.

Lap 62, Kevin Harvick’s lead is approaching two seconds over Brad Keselowski.

Lap 64, there are 30 cars on the lead lap.

Lap 65, Kevin Harvick is pulling away from the field with a lead of over two seconds on Brad Keselowski; Kyle Busch is in thirld three seconds back.

Lap 66, Kevin Harvick is picking up where he left off on Saturday and continues to dominate the race; he now has a lead of over two and a half seconds on Brad Keselowski with Kyle Busch in third nearly three and a half seconds back.

Lap 72, the top five are Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Christopher, and Clint Bowyer.

Lap 75, Kevin Harvick continues to hold on to his two and a half second lead on Brad Keselowski with Kyle Busch in third over four seconds back.

Erik Jones is reporting a very tight condition in his car.

Lap 77, Kevin Harvick has increased his lead on Brad Keselowski to over three seconds with Kyle Busch four and a half seconds back in third.

Lap 79, Kevin Harvick continues his lead of three seconds on Brad Keselowski with 30 cars on the lead lap.

Lap 81, Kevin Harvick is dominating the race with a lead of three and a half seconds on Brad Keselowski; Kyle Busch, Christopher Bell, and Clint Bowyer round out the top five.

Kyle Busch reports that he feels like he has a tire coming apart.

Lap 93, the top five are Ryan Blaney, Kevin Harvick, Chase Elliott, and Brad Keselowski.

Lap 95, Ryan Blaney is in the lead with Denny Hamlin in second and Brad Keselowski in third.

The caution flag comes out for a big crash involving Penske Racing drivers Ryan Blaney and Brad Keselowski.  In a battle for the lead, Brad Keselowski makes contact with Brad Keselowski, sending both drivers into the wall hard.  Keselowski’s car comes to a stop in the grass.  He climbs out of his car and stops to examine the damage before making the ambulance ride to the infield care center.

Clint Bowyer and Alex Bowman make contact in trying to avoid the crashed cars; causing damage to both cars.

Denny Hamlin brings the field down for the green flag restart on lap 101 with Kyle Busch alongside on the front row.  After a push from Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin gets out in front for the lead but Kevin Harvick comes from the outside to take the lead.

Clint Bowyer has a heavily smoking car on the restart.

Lap 103, Kevin Harvick is in the lead with Denny Hamlin in second; Chase Elliott, Kyle Busch, and Aric Almirola round out the top five.

Clint Bowyer has to bring his car down pit road for an unscheduled pit stop for a tire change.

Christopher Bell has a heavily smoking car and brings out the caution flag on lap 105 with a flat tire.

In an interview outside the infield care center, Brad Keselowski said that he “just lost it”; adding that it was his fault and he really felt bad for his team mate Ryan Blaney.

On the outside of their fuel window, drivers bring their cars down pit road for service with several team calling for fuel only.  Denny Hamlin and Matt DiBenedetto win the race off of pit road after taking only fuel.

After staying out on the track, Aric Almirola brings the field down for the green flag restart on lap 110 with Kevin Harvick on the inside lane.  Drivers are getting four wide across the track.

Almirola stayed out on the track after some miscommunication with his team.

Lap 113, drivers are battling for position all through the field.  Aric Almirola holds on to a narrow lead on Kevin Harvick with Martin Truex Jr in third nearly a second behind the leader.

Lap 115, Kevin Harvick passes Aric Almirola for the lead but has not pulled away from the field.

Lap 117, Kevin Harvick has pulled out to a half second lead on Aric Almirola; Martin Truex Jr, Denny Hamlin, and Matt DiBenedetto round out the top five.

Lap 122, Kevin Harvick holds on to his lead on Aric Almirola with Martin Truex Jr, Denny Hamlin, and Kurt Busch rounding out the top five.

Thirty to go, Kevin Harvick has the lead but is reporting temps are up in the engine.

Lap 128, leader Kevin Harvick now has a half second lead on Aric Almirola with Martin Truex Jr in third.

With 26 laps remaining in the race, Kevin Harvick, Aric Almirola, and Martin Trues Jr make it a three way battle for the lead with Kevin Harvick holding on to the top spot; Martin Truex Jr takes second and Aric Almirola is in third.

There are 28 cars on the lead lap.

Alex Bowman has a flat tire leaving part of the tire on the track, bringing out the caution flag with 19 laps remaining in the race.

Dominating the weekend at Michigan, Kevin Harvick wins the race to sweep the weekend, get his sixth race win of the season, and move ahead of Lee Petty on the all time winners list with 55 wins and ties him with Rusty Wallace in tenth place.

This is the first time in nearly 50 years that the same driver won races in back to back days when Richard Petty did it in 1971.
