Originally planned as an indoor event at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, MTV is moving their annual Video Music Awards outside.  The event will take place at various location throughout New York City on August 30.

MTV has a history of presenting a portion of the annual awards gala from remote locations in an effort to make the show more interesting; this year the remote broadcasts are to allow the show to be presented in a safe manner.

Even though the number of cases in New York state and New York City have leveled off, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has set some strict standards to keep the numbers down including face coverings while in public and no large crowds or gatherings allowed.

According to MTV and the Barclays Center, the 2020 MVA’s will, “pay homage to the incredible resiliency of New York with several outdoor performances around the City with limited or no audience.”

K-Pop sensations BTS, Doja Cat, and J Balvin have been named as performers during the awards gala.  A show host and more performers will be named in the coming days.

Fans may cast their votes for their favourites in 15 different categories from now until August 23 at vma.mtv.com.  Voting for the Best New Artist is open until show time on August 30.

MTV plans to return to the Barclays Center in 2021 for the VMA’s.
