When the NFL Players Association approved their new contract, it included an expanded season and playoffs.
On March 31 the owners also approved the expansion of the post season with 75 percent of the owners voting yes.
Beginning with the 2020 playoff season, the number of teams involved will expand to nearly half of the league when 14 of the 32 teams will be involved in the post season.
Under the new playoff format, Wild Card weekend will feature three games in each conference – AFC and NFC – with the number two seed playing the number seven seed, the number three seed will play the number six seed, and the number four seed playing the number five seed. The number one seed will get the weekend off.
NBC and CBS will carry the games on January 9 and 10. The NFL will also air a game on the youth network Nickelodeon with the broadcast aimed at younger viewers. Some of the games will also be streamed online.
