Over the years, Daytona International Speedway has seen its share of “the big one” and horrific crashes; 19 years ago one of those crashes took the life of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Sr.

After a last lap crash at the Daytona 500 on February 17 that put Ryan Newman sliding across the finish line on his roof and in flames in the ninth position.

After safety workers extricated Newman from his car, he was taken immediately to the Halifax Medical Center where he was listed as in severe condition with non-life threatening injuries.

While specifics on those injuries have not been revealed, the latest update says that Newman is awake and communicating with doctors and family.

Newman and his family have expressed their appreciation for the concern and support from fans and the NASCAR community.
