Before there was “Dancing with the Stars” there was “Strictly Come Dancing”.
In a recent program two of the shows professional male dancers paired up for a performance. Johannes Radebe, who is openly gay, and Graziano di Prima joined up for a dance routine that Radebe said had no male and female roles, just free movement.
While marked as the first time a same sex pair was featured on a performance, it is not the first time a couple has appeared together on the show. Last year dance professionals Pasha Kovalev and AJ Pritchard danced together as a part of a group dance. To date all dances involving same sex couples have been performed by the professionals; no celebrity contestants have participated.
Radebe spoke on the event saying he felt, “liberated” and, “for the first time I feel accepted for who I am.” He added, “to be able to dance with a friend I respect and adore is joyous. There’s a bromance galore between us, but there were no male and female roles, just free movement. It was beautiful, classy, and elegant.”
