Named after award winning entertainer, the MTV Vanguard Award is presented at the annual MTV Video Music Awards for achievement and contributions to the world of music.

After being the first female rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, two time VMA award winner Missy Elliott will also become the first female rapper to receive the coveted Vanguard Award when the MTV VMAs are presented on August 26.

Elliott is the fourth rap artist to receive the award, following in the footsteps of LLCool J, the Beastie Boys, and Kanye West.

Elliott will take the stage during the annual awards gala, marking her first appearance on the VMA stage in over a decade.

Speaking on the decision to present the Vanguard Award to the four time Grammy Award winner, Viacom head of music and music talent and co-brand head of MTV International Bruce Gillmer said, “Missy’s impact on the music landscape is indelible. Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched.”
