The playoff race begins for the Monster Energy Cup Series on a hot September weekend from Las Vegas Motor Speedway where air temperatures are reaching triple digits and in car temperatures well over 100 degrees.

After three round of qualifying, Erik Jones – #ThatJonesBoy – wins his second career pole and will bring the field to the green flag

Stages one and two of the race are 80 laps each with stage three lasting 107 laps for a total of 267 laps around the mile and a half track and a 400 mile race. The drivers cannot complete any of the stages without making a pit stop.

Former driver and Las Vegas resident Brendan Gaughan gave a rousing command to start the engines.

The race has not even begun and the temperatures inside the cars are around 125 degrees.

Erik Jones brings the field down for the green flag start of the race and edges out in front for the lead but Joey Logano gets passed Jones for to lead lap one.

The top five are Joey Logano, Kyle Busch, Erik Jones, Ryan Blaney, and Kurt Busch.

Lap four, Joey Logano has pulled out to a half second lead on Kyle Busch with pole sitter Erik Jones in third.

Lap six, Joey Logano has increased his lead to nearly a second on Kyle Busch with Erik Jones, Ryan Blaney, and Kevin Harvick rounding out the top five.

Lap eight, Joey Logano has pulled out to a lead of over a second on Kyle Busch with Erik Jones, Ryan Blaney, and Kevin HarvicK rounding out the top five.

Lap 12, Joey Logano holds on to his one second lead over Kyle Busch; with Erik Jones, Ryan Blaney, and Kevin Harvick rounding out the top five.

After starting the race from the back of the field, Austin Dillon has moved up to 22nd place.

Lap 14, Kyle Busch has closed the gap to leader Joey Logano to less than a second.

On lap 16, the in car temperatures have climbed to over 140 degrees.

Lap 19, the top three remain Joey Logano, Kyle Busch, and Erik Jones with 37 cars on the lead lap.

Chase Elliott is reporting a vibration; his crew chief told him to turn on the brake fans. There have been no further reports from Elliott.

Lap 22, Joey Logano continues to lead the race but it is now down to under half a second over Kyle Busch with Erik Jones in third.

Lap 25, Kyle Busch has caught up to leader Joey Logano. Kevin Harvick takes third from Erik Jones.

The caution flag comes out on lap 147 when Kevin Harvick gets into the wall and collect Erik Jones who had no place to go.

With all of the extra points he has earned during the regular season, the wreck does not harm Kevin Harvick’s position, but for Erik Jones, he is now 14 points below the cut line for the end of round one.

Brad Keselowski wins the race off of pit road.

Drivers use ice to try and cool down in the hot cars. Jimmie Johns reported that it is so hot that the melted water in the cars from the ice is actually boiling.

Jamie McMurray spins out and hits the wall bringing out the caution flag on lap 213, Chase Elliott gets caught up in the crash when he has no place to go and has significant damage to his car.

Chase Elliott has also fallen below the cutoff line at the end of round one in the playoffs.

With 52 laps remaining in the race, half of the playoff drivers have had issues from pit road penalties to getting involved in a crash.

With 24 laps remaining in the race, the top five are Kyle Larson, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Martin Truex Jr and Jimmie Johnson.

After a 10 minute red flag condition, NASCAR has displayed the yellow flag and the cars are moving once again.
