On June 10 the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing held their annual Tony Award celebration to honour the best on and off Broadway.

Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles serve as host for the 72nd annual gala event at Radio City Music Hall

The evening begins with Groban and Bareillis at the piano for an opening number dedicated to all the people who will go home without an award. At the end of the performance they are joined by ensemble members from every nominated musical.

Kerry Washington gets the award celebration started by presenting the award for Best Leading Actor in a Play to Andrew Garfield for his role in “Angels in America”. Garfied dedicated his award to the LGBTQ community and those who have fought for equality and the right to be…; he adds that we are all sacred and we all belong so let’s bake a cake for everyone.

The award for Best Featured Actress in a Play went to Laurie Metcalfe for her role in “Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women”.

The cast of “My Fair Lady” gives a medley performance of songs from the musical.

Award winning entertainer Billy Joel takes the stage to present a Special Tony Award to Bruce Springsteen for his one man show “Springsteen on Broadway”. He thanked Broadway for making him welcome on their block.

The award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical went to Lindsay Mendez for her role in “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel”.

Cast members from “SpongeBob Square Pants” gave a performance.

The award for Best Book of a Musical went to Itamar Moses for “The Band’s Visit”.

The award for Best Featured Actor in a Play went to Nathan Lane for his role in “Angels in America”.

Members from the cast of “Carousel” performed “Blow High, Blow Low”.

The award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical went to Ari’el Stachel for his role in “The Band’s Visit”. He noted in his speech that your biggest obstacle may become your purpose.

The award for Excellence in Theatre Education was presented to drama teacher Melody Herzfeld from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Hezrfeld herself shielded over five dozen students in her office while a gunman went on a shooting rampage in the school. Member of the drama club performed on the stage and received a standing ovation.

The award for Best Leading Actress in a Play went to Glenda Jackson for her role in “Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women”. This is her first Tony Award.

Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber has created some of the biggest hits on Broadway and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award…and a montage tribute of his musicals including performances by hosts Sara Bareillis and Josh Groban.

The award for Best Direction of a Play went to John Tiffany for “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two”. Since it is his boyfriend David’s birthday, John had the house sing “Happy Birthday” to David.

The award for Best Play went to “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two”.

The award for Best Revival of a Musical went to “Once on this Island”. In a business who often says no, the award was dedicated to all the people who said yes to the production.

The award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical went to Katrina Lenk for her role in “The Band’s Visit”.

Bernadette Peters presented the final award of the night for Best Musical to “The Band’s Visit”.

Hosts Saraes and Josh Groban end the show the way it began with a performance dedicated to the theatre world and the dreamers.
