In the wake of numerous cancellations at the Kennedy Center the White House announced that the Performing Arts Center would be closing this summer to undergo a two year renovation project.
At the board of directors meeting held at the White House on March 16, the board voted to shut down operations at the Kennedy Center after the Fourth of July events.
The White House claims the iconic venue is ‘in need of repairs”; however, artists who have performed at The Center refute the claim.
The White House told reporters, “we’re going to ensure it remains the finest performing arts facility of its kind anywhere in the world.”
Last week Kennedy Center president Richard Grenell resigned; during their meeting on Monday, the board named Matt Floca as the executive director and CEO.
The board reported that the vote for closure was unanimous; however ex officio member Rep. Joyce Beatty was not allowed to cast a vote.
Less than a month after taking office for the second time, the current White House resident made a hostile takeover of the Kennedy Center; ousting the board and installing loyalists. Numerous resignations and performance cancellations have followed. The name on the Center has also been illegally changed.
