When are you most happy?

That’s probably one of the easiest questions to answer….MUSIC!

As long as I can remember, music has been a part of my life; whether it be listening, playing, or learning about music.

My dad is a classically trained pianist. His bachelor’s degree is in piano and pipe organ. The piano was an essential part of the furniture in our home. When I moved out of my parent’s home, the thing I really missed the most was hearing my dad play his piano.

My musical proficiency as a player is nothing compared to my dad. But I greatly enjoy trying to play and learning. My biggest problem is that I am everywhere and am not very organized in my learning path.

Music theory classes are often the biggest bug-a-boo for music majors. To put it simply…they HATE it. Me, I took music theory classes in college because I LIKED it! I thought they were fun.

Lately I have been hooked on watching videos of “Live from Daryl’s House”. Daryl Hall invites fellow musicians to his club for some jam sessions. They often mix things up when it comes to the songs; discussing how they want to play the song. And at times those discussions include talking about key signatures, chords, and how things are put together. The music is great, but getting to hear…and understand…those conversations is awesome.

As for listening to music, there is always music playing in my home. I have an ipod in the bedroom that stays on shuffle – it does seem to have a few favourite artists though :). When I take a shower, the phone goes in the bathroom with me and I play tunes while I shower.

Music is a great thing, it can be the answer to any mood. It can calm you down, get you moving, cheer you up, and even “sooth the savage soul”.

Once in an interview I noted that “Music is the greatest drug in the world; best of all it’s free.” The musician I was speaking with added, “and it isn’t bad for you.”

Doctors have finally come to understand that music can be an aid in the healing process.

Music truly is the greatest thing and there is something for everyone to enjoy.

It boggles my brain that there are some groups of people who think music and dancing are a bad thing.
