The revival of the musical “Mamma Mia!” has been back on Broadway for only two weeks but in that time it has set box office records with last week’s box office bringing in the highest numbers of the show’s run; falling just shy of the $2 million mark and earning a spot in the top five of the Million Dollar Club.
Again this week, “Hamilton” and “Wicked” top the list with box office draws of over $2 million.
“The Lion King” and “Maybe Happy Ending” round out the top five with “Maybe Happy Ending” continues to show why it was the Tony Award winner for Best Musical. The show’s Tony Award winning star Darren Criss will be taking a break from the show in a couple of weeks.
As summer continues to wind down, there was an overall drop in the box office last week with 28 shows running. It was also Kids’ Night on Broadway last week where children under the age of 18 got into a show for free when accompanied by a full priced ticket adult.
Broadway Week’s BOGO event will take place in a few weeks.
But even with the summer drop in theater attendees, the Broadway box office is ahead of this time last year – a year that was the highest grossing year in Broadway history.
