African beats and rhythms ahs been a part of American music from the days when slave traders first began kidnapping and enslaving people from the nations of the “Dark Continent”; but they have only recently become a part of the Billboard music charts and various awards presentations.
The staff at Billboard Magazine have compiled their list of the all time 50 Best Afrobeats Songs. Staff members used ”stylistic representation of the genre, local popularity, regional expansion, cultural impact and commercial success” to determine their 50 best songs. Staffers also limited each artist to a maximum of three songs.
Afrobeats is style of Wester African music that takes advantage of polyrhythms and syncopation. Lyrics are sung in Yoruba, Nigerian Pidgin and English.
