Jerry Garcia died one week after his 53rd birthday as the result of a heart attack. Even after his passing, the band he formed in 1965 soldiered on for nearly 30 more years.
Coinciding with Garcia’s birthday on August 1, the surviving members of the Grateful Dead (Bob Weir and Mickey Hart)…and John Mayer – Dead and Company – will celebrate 60 years of music with three days of performances in the city that started it all – San Francisco.
San Francisco mayor Daniel Lurie made the announcement via social media saying, “we have some really big news. Dead & Co., three shows, August 1st, 2nd and 3rd, right here in the city that is the home of the Grateful Dead. What better way to celebrate? We’ll see you out here in August.”
Lurie noted that when Dead & Company played in San Francisco in 2023, it generated $31 million for the local economy.
Lurie added, “from Haight-Ashbury and the Grateful Dead house to Ingleside, where Jerry Garcia grew up, the Grateful Dead is embedded in San Francisco’s history. Sixty years later, we’re still enjoying their music — and this summer, we get to enjoy the music of Dead and Company once again.”
Planned for Golden Gate Park, San Francisco Recreation and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg said in a statememt, “Golden Gate Park and the Grateful Dead share a rich, intertwined history that helped shape a cultural era. Celebrating their 60th anniversary with a Dead and Company performance in the very place where the Summer of Love took root is a powerful tribute to their legacy.”
