Race two of the triple header weekend is the United Rentals 250 in the Xfinity Series.  A high banked 2.66 mile track, Talladega is frequently the site for calamity and chaos.  Thirty-eight teams brought cars to Talladega for 38 starting spots – all of the drivers will make it in the race.

Talladega Superspeedway is race two in round one of the playoffs for the Xfinity Series.

With no practice the drivers will take to the track to make their qualifying runs. There are two rounds in qualifying with the top 10 drivers moving on to round two where they will set the pole.

The first driver on the track is Carson Ware who posted a time of 54.480 seconds.

Team owner Jordan Anderson posted a time of 53.663 seconds, breaking the 54 second mark.

Caesar Bacarella has smoke coming from his car and did no complete a qualifying round, but he will make the race and start from the back of the field.

Nearly half of the field – 15 – drivers starting the race today are part-time drivers.

Dean Thompson and Taylor Gray ran in the Truck Series race on Friday afternoon and are doing double duty this weekend.

AJ Allmendinger breaks the 53 second mark with a time of 52.906 seconds.

Jesse Love, AJ Allmendinger, Riley Herbst, Shane van Gisbergen, Austin Hill, Parker Kligerman, Sheldon Creed, Chandler Smith, Aric Almirola, and Cole Custer will all be moving on to round two of the qualifying.  Aric Almirola is the only non-playoff driver in the top 10.

During inspection, an issue with the windshield perimeter and Aric Almirola will start the race from the back of the field and will have to serve a passthrough penalty once the green flag drops.

Parker Kligerman is the first of the top 10 to make a qualifying run in round two and posts a time of 52.969 seconds.

With a time of 52.578 seconds Jesse Love puts his number two car on the pole with teammate Austin Hill alongside on the front row.  It is the fourth front row sweep for Richard Childress Racing.

Tommy Joe Martins, CJ McLaughlin, and Joey Gase will have to start the race from the back of the field after crews made some unapproved adjustments to the cars.

Stages one and two are 25 laps each with stage three lasting 44 laps for a total of 94 laps around the 2.66 mille track. 

Jesse Love brings the field down for the green flag start of the race from the outside lane with teammate Austin Hill alongside.  Austin Hill edges out for the lead.

Lap two, Austin Hill leads the race as Aric Almirola makes his passthrough penalty.  While he will not lose a lap serving the penalty, Almirola has lost the draft and will be running several miles per hour slower.

Lap three, drivers are beginning to spread out three wide.

The top five are Austin Hill, AJ Allmendinger, Chandler Smith, Jesse Love, and Riley Herbst.

Lap four, AJ Allmendinger takes the lead.

Lap five, AJ Allmendinger leads the race with Riley Herbst in second. 

Sam Mayer has moved up on the inside to battle with AJ Allmendinger for the lead.

Lap 10, Jesse Love has retaken the lead with AJ Allmendinger in second; Ryah Sieg, Austin Hill, and Anthony Alfredo round out thet top five.

The drivers are working to create a third lane in the middle.

Since serving his passthrough penalty, Aric Almirola is still in last place and is in danger of going a lap down.

Lap 14, leader Jesse Love passes Aric Almirola to put him a lap down.

Lap 16, Jesse Love holds on to a narrow lead over AJ Allmendinger; Chandler Smith, Austin Hill, and Justin Allgaier round out the top five.

Lap 17, Jesse Love and AJ Allmendinger are side by side in a battle for the lead.  Love holds off Almendinger to keep the lead.

Lap 19, Jesse Love holds on to the lead with Chandler Smith and Justin Allgaier in a battle for second.

Lap 21, Jesse Love and Chandler Smith battle for the lead with Sheldon Creed and Justin Allgaier in a battle for third.

The double yellow line at the apron is out of bounds.  Any driver who goes below the yellow line and advances his position, will have to serve a penalty.

In the middle lane, Jesse Love not only loses the lead but drops back in the field.  Chandler Smith is the new leader.

Jut three laps remain in stage one, Chandler Smith leads the race with Justin Allgaier in second; AJ Allmendinger, Sheldon Creed, and Taylor Gray round out the top five.

Chandler Smith wins stage one for his seventh stage win of the season.

Aric Almirola is the “lucky dog” and is back on the lead lap.

Drivers come down pit road for service with Jesse Love winning the race off of pit road after taking fuel only.

Matt DiBenedetto was charged with an uncontrolled tire on pit road and will have to restart the race form the back of the field.

Before the pit stop Austin Hill reported that his car was out of control; adding he didn’t know what the car was going to do.  The crew made several adjustments during the pit stop.

Chandler Smith reports that the throttle pedal has burnt his foot.

Jesse Love brings the field down for the green flag start of stage two on lap 31 with Chandler smith alongside.  Love gets out in front from the outside lane.

Lap 32, the top five are Jesse Love, Chandler Smith, Justin Allgaier, Sheldon Creed, and Cole Custer.

Jesse Love moves up and down the track blocking each lane.  The 19 year old won the spring race at Talladega.

Lap 34, drivers are spreading out three and four wide.

The largest track on the NASCAR circuit, the 2.66 mile track of Talladega features 33 degree banking.

Lap 35, Jesse Love continues to lead the race with Justin Allgaier in second; Cole Custer, Austin Hill, and Anthony alfredo round out the top five.

Jesse Love has led 19 of the 37 laps so far.

Lap 39, Jesse Love continues to lead the race but is now on the inside lane against the double yellow line; Justin Allgaier, Austin Hill, Anthony Alfredo, and Taylor Gray round out the top five.

Kyle Weatherman has returned to the track 15 laps down.

Lap 42 the caution flag comes out for a crash.  AJ Allmendinger checked up to avoid wrecking leader Jesse Love and caught up the back of the field.  Justin Allgaier passed Jesse Love for the lead as the crash was happening.

Nick Leitz, Parker Kligerman, Josh Williams, and Jeb Burton were all involved in the wreck.

Some of the drivers back in the field come down pit road for service to flip the stage.  Taylor Gray was caught speeding on pit road.

Justin Allgaier brings the field down for the green flag restart with just four laps remaining in stage two with Austin Hill alongside.  Austin Hill edges out for the lead after a push from Jesse Love.

Austin Hill and Justin Allgaier continue to battle for the lead.  Aric Almirola is among the drivers in a three wide battle.

With two laps to go in stage two, Justin Allgaier has the lead but Austin Hill comes up to take the lead.

Drivers come down pit road for service with Riley Herbst winning the race off of pit road.  Several of the drivers took fuel only; while others took only two tires.

Riley Herbst brings the field down for the green flag start of stage three with Brandon Jones alongside on lap 57.  Riley Herbst takes the lead.

The top five are Riley Herbst, Chandler smith, Brandon Jones, Taylor, and Carson Kvapil.

Drivers are spreading out three and four wide across the track in a battle for position.

Brandon Jones gets caught alone in the middle and falls through the field.

Jesse Love jumps down to lead the inside lane and comes up to battle with Riley Herbst for the lead.

Lap 59, Jesse Love takes the lead with Sammy Smith in second.

Lap 60, the drivers have settled into two lanes with some of the cars strung out back in the field.

Jesse Love leads the race from the outside lane with Riley Herbst in second; Sammy Smith, Chandler Smith, and AJ Allmendinger round out the top five.

Lap 66, Sammy Smith battle with Riley Herbst and Chandler Smith in a three wide battle for the lead.  Sammy Smith takes the lead and drops to the inside lane.

With 27 laps remaining in the race, the field is three wide with Riley Herbst out in front.

Riley Herbst leads the inside lane, Sammy Smith leads the middle lane, and Chandler Smith leads the outside lane.  Chandler Smith gets out in front for the lead with Jesse Love in second.

With the drivers swapping lanes back and forth, it is almost like a big crash waiting to happen.

With 23 laps to go, Chandler Smith and AJ Allmendinger  battle for the lead.

Lap 73, AJ Allmendinger takes the lead.

Twenty to go, Riley Herbst and AJ Allmendinger battle for the lead.

Big crash with cars going in all directions with 19 laps to go.  Van Gisbergen and Dean Thompson make contact that causes a chain reaction.  Shane van Gisbergen, Dean Thompson, David Starr, Taylor Gray, Josh Williams, Austin Hill, Jordan Anderson, and Sam Mayer were all involved.

Just a handful of drivers come down pit road including Jesse Love.

On the “crash clock”, Austin Hill’s car has a lot of damage to his car. 

Jordan Anderson and Taylor Gray are out of the race.

Chandler Smith reports that his right foot has gone “completely numb” and he can only hear from one side of the radio so the communication is not clear.

AJ Allmendinger brings the field down for the green flag restart with just 13 laps remaining in the race with Sammy Smith alongside.  Allmendinger gets out in front from the inside lane.

The top five are AJ Allmendinger, Riley Herbst, Samm Smith, Chandler Smith, and Justin Allgaier.

Arick Almirola’s car is smoking with a possible tire issue.  He works his way to pit road.

Riley Herbst and AJ Allmendinger continue their battle for the lead.

The caution flag comes out for debris on the track from Aric Almirola’s car with eleven laps to go.

And one more time, Kyle Weatherman gets another lap back.

Riley Herbst brings the field down for the green flag restart with just eight laps remaining in the race.  Getting a push from AJ Allmendinger, Riley Herbst takes the lead.

AJ Allmendinger drops to the inside to try and takes the lead.

With six laps to go, Sammy Smith takes the lead with teammates Justin Allgaier and Brandon Jones right behind him.

Five to go, Justin Allgaier drops to the inside to take the lead.

Four to go, Riley Herbst moves up to battle with Justin Allgaier for the lead.  Chandler Smith comes up on the inside for a three way battle.

Riley Herbst retakes the lead.

Three to go and it’s “The Big One!”  The race goes into overtime.

NASCAR has red flagged the race.

Brandon Jones gives Carson Kvapil a push and Kvapil gets loose, spinning out and collects several cars.  Parker Kligerman, Cole Custer, Justin Allgaier, Parker Retzlaff, Jeb Burton, AJ Allmendinger, Dylan Lupton, Anthony Alfredo, Jesse Love, and Blaine Perkins were also involved.

After less than 10 minutes, the red flag has been withdrawn and the caution flag displayed.  The crews are working on the damaged cars. 

This will be the 13th overtime finish for the Xfinity Series this season.

Brandon Jones has been checked and cleared from the infield care center; other than losing his voice, Jones is fine.

Riley Herbst brings the field down for the overtime shootout to the end with Sammy Smith alongside.  Herbst gets out in front after a push.

Sammy Smith wins the race as cars crash behind him. To give car owner Dale Earnhardt Jr his 87 career win as an owner.

Sammy Smith came into the race last in points in the top 12.  Smith’s win shakes up the point standings.

The win secures Sammy Smith a spot in the next round of the playoffs.
