There has been a long standing feud between the critics with their reviews and the audience members who attend the shows. The same could be said for award nominee committees. This past spring, the revival of the musical “The Wiz” did not receive any nominations at the annual Tony Awards; but the fans have other thoughts. Not only is the show in the Million Dollar Club this week, it has entered the top five bringing in over a million and a half dollars! “Wicked”, “The Lion King”, “Hamilton”, and “Aladdin” round out the top five. “Wicked” and “The Lion King” have again topped $2 million in box office receipts.
The August 11 performance of “The Lion King” was filled with an audience of comped ticket holders.
The musical “Illinoise” was one of the 15 productions in the Million Dollar Club for its final week of performances.
As families make that final trip before the children go back to school, Broadway brought in over $30 million last week. And those numbers are likely to increase as the new season begins.
The revival of “Once Upon a Mattress” opened this week.
