“I didn’t start doing what I was doing to get awards.  I just fell in love with the idea of comedy.”

He many not have intended to earn awards, but Kevin Hart recently joined an elite group of comedians…those who have been named as recipients of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humour.

In its 25th year, Hart joins winners that include Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Whoopi Goldberg, Bob Newhart, Carol Burnett and Dave Chapelle.

Held at the Kennedy Center, the gala that presents the bronze Mark Twain bust is similar to the gala held for Kennedy Center Honours recipients with tributes from friends and colleagues.  Bill Cosby has also been presented with the Prize but after sexual assault allegations, the award was rescinded.

The gala included a performance by Robin Thicke and Nelly and appearances from Nikki Glazer, J.B. Smoove from “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, Regina Hall, Dave Chappelle, and Chris Rock.

Hart began his comedic career at open mic events and at small comedy clubs in his native Philadelphia.  He has gone on to appear in nearly 100 films and television productions including his most recent appearance as the book on “The Masked Singer” where he revealed himself prior to the official “take it off” reveal.

The ceremony will be broadcast on Netflix May 11.
