This past week Broadway saw an overall drop in revenues and attendance. But still managed to set some impressive records at the box office. With only 26 shows currently running, Broadway took in over $30 million from more than 230,000 theatergoers.
And after running for over 25 years, the musical adaptation of “The Lion King” brought in nearly two and a half million dollars last week. In its first full week of operation, “Back to the Future” earned over $1 million. “Hamilton”, “Wicked”, “Funny Girl”, and “Parade” also brought in over $1 million each at the box office.
Twenty of the 26 shows currently running had a seating capacity of over 90 percent with “Hamilton”, “Hadestown”, and “Parade” with a capacity of over 100 percent.
In its final weeks, “Good Night, Oscar” continues to set box office records, setting a new record for the fourth week in a row.
Following in the footsteps of “Hamilton” with a non-white cast (this one is all Filipino actors), the David Byrne and Fatboy Slim production “Here Lies Love” had its best week yet at the box office.
The 12 shows that broke the $1 million mark last week are:
“The Lion King”
“Hamilton”
“Wicked”
”Funny Girl”
“Parade”
“Sweeney Todd”
“Aladdin”
“MJ The Musical”
“Harry Potter and the Cursed Stone”
